The Covid-19 pandemic has practically closed the film industry because majority of people around the world are either under quarantine, self-isolation or social distancing. Which means cinemas will be closed and film production stopped. After numerous cancellations of the upcoming premieres, many of these films have announced new release dates in the hope that the pandemic will be over by the end of summer.
The first was the suspension of Mission: Impossible 7 in Italy in February. Since then, almost all films and TV shows have shifted their shooting times and the studios have stopped publishing films at the box office. One of the films that was postponed was A Quiet Place Part II, which was due to be released in March.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is that people said that our film is a film you should all watch together,” scriptwriter and director John Krasinski tweeted on March 12. “Well, given the constantly changing circumstances in the world around us, this is clearly not the right time to do this.”
Krasinski added that he was incredibly excited that the fans saw the sequel, but that he would wait to release it if everyone could see it together.
“We hope and believe that people will always go to the cinema where they are available, but we understand that this is becoming less and less possible for people in different parts of the world,” said Jeff Shell, CEO of NBCUniversal, at Variety.
Instead of delaying some of their films or broadcasting “in a difficult distribution landscape”, Universal Pictures announced in March that Emma, Invisible Man and The Hunt would be available to viewers on request.
