There are important women who were African leaders and played an important role in the history of the continent, especially during the pre and post-British colonial era.

  1. Amina the Queen of Zaria Nigeria: Amina Mohamud was a Hausa warrior queen from the city-state of Zazzau, which is currently in the northwest region of Nigeria. His leadership skills were discovered early on by his grandfather who allowed him to attend state meetings.

  1. Kandake – Empress of Ethiopia: Kandake or Candace was considered one of the most feared war generals of his time. Historians have said she was known to be a fierce, tactical, and supportive military leader.
  2. Makeda – The Queen of Sheba, Ethiopia: Makeda was renowned as a queen of incredible strength, having survived a battle with the serpent king Awre.
  3. Nefertiti – Queen of Ancient Kemet, Egypt: Nefertiti was an Egyptian queen and the great royal wife (chief wife) of Akhenaten, an Egyptian pharaoh. Together with her husband, she oversaw what was arguably the richest period in ancient Egyptian history.
  4. Yaa Asantewa – Ashanti Kingdom, Ghana: Asantewa was the queen mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire – now part of modern Ghana. In 1900, she fought the Ashanti War known as the War of the Golden Stool, also known as the Yaa Asantewaa War, against British settlers.
  5. Queen Nandi – Zulu Kingdom, South Africa: Queen Nandi has been resilient as a mother and hope in the face of social pressures. She was the mother of Shaka Zulu, one of the greatest kings of the Zulu kingdom. According to historians, during the reign of her son, she had a significant influence on the affairs of the kingdom.
  6. Queen Moremi – Isle-Ife Kingdom, Nigeria: Queen Moremi was a courageous queen who is legendary for helping deliver the Yoruba tribe from oppression.
