The September 8, 1961 issue of Life magazine contained a photo essay about 19-year-old Muhammad Ali who had an unusual training technique. He trained underwater.
However, he was confident that his underwater training would give him the advantage in the ring. The text of the photo essay stated:
“Not to brag or something, but they say I’m the fastest heavyweight in the ring today. This comes from punching underwater. ”

In reality, however, Muhammad Ali did not train underwater. The photo shoot he did for Life was the only time he ever trained underwater. He had made up the story of underwater training as a stunt to advertise.
