Why I Stopped Visiting Churches in Nigeria – Chimamanda Adichie

chimamanda adichie

Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said she did not attend the Catholic churches in Nigeria because activities had become ‘far too much’ about money, fundraising and thanksgiving.

The 43-year-old author made the announcement in a recent interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, a television host. She further says that she still considers herself nominally a Catholic

Read her post below;

“I grew up Catholic. Catholicism was very important to me. It’s almost like a culture, not just a religion. Even if you leave the Catholic Church, it is in you. “Today I do not like to talk about religion, because I do not know,” she said.
‘I consider myself agnostic and questionable. Catholicism holds you tight. There are many other Protestant denominations that are not. It is all-encompassing. “You can not eat in front of the masses. You must go to confession. ‘
“There are so many rules. It teaches you in a way that in my opinion is not so many Protestant denominations. I am Catholic, namely. I still feel protective towards some things regarding the Catholic Church. But I do not attend it in Nigeria. ”
Chimamanda also spoke of her admiration for Pope Francis for his ‘attempt to reform the system’.
‘Nigerian Catholicism is all too much about money, fundraising and thanksgiving. Some in the east even see who carries gold. “I think the focus of religion should be on things that Nigerian Catholicism does not focus on,” she said.
“I call myself culturally a Catholic. But if I’m religious, that means I’m going to act and confess, then I’m not. I do not go to church in Nigeria. Out of the country? Definitely not often. If I find a progressive Catholic Church, I go.
“There’s something more beautiful about the mist. I love Latin, the priests sweep in their dresses and the sense of community. But there are also many things I struggle with. This is the pope I love because he’s so human.
‘Hyper-conservative Catholics do not like him. But when they read Catholic history, they should know that there were people like him who reformed the church. I respect religion in general while questioning some of its excesses. ”
