Leading Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in a speech on gender-based violence pointed out that women are the main victims and that this happens in the womb.

She stated that most pregnancies before birth are “predominantly female pregnancies” and “especially because they are female” are terminated.
She pointed out that boys are treated differently than girls from birth. She said that little girls are cuddled more while boys are taught to be tough and not to cry.
She acknowledged that there is female to female violence and male to male violence, but said the majority of domestic violence cases are committed by men to women.
She added that men also suffer from their gender. She explained that men are ashamed of not being financially rich, showing weakness, and failing.
She said that a lot needs to be changed and suggested what that change should look like.
The renowned author, who was awarded the “Africa Freedom Prize 2020” by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), gave this speech at the award ceremony on December 14, 2020.
