‘I did it for the grassroots’ – Carlos Ahenkrah says after taking the ballot

Carlos Ahenkrah, Member of Parliament for Theme East, said his show in parliament was that the grassroots had to let them know they cared.

In a statement, he said

My party the Npp obviously enjoys a slim majority in parliament thanks to the independent candidate of fomena. According to this arithmetic, the Npp had to occupy the right side of the speaker in the room. When we entered parliament, the opposition held our seats. We tried to convince and work things out with them, but it slowed down as they almost attacked the paralegal. We conceded because of the inauguration that lay ahead and sat in their space. Then the clerk of parliament announced that the competent assistant north mp may not vote on the basis of a court order served on him.

After a long heated debate, the NDC would still not yield. Leadership went into a conclave and returned with one of the most unfavorable agreements ever. That a clause in the constitution prohibits anyone who is unable to vote in parliament from voting. If the proxy decides to vote, he himself suffers from it. How ridiculous! What if his vote changes the outcome of the election before he goes to court?
Then we voted, and the minority claimed that they may not allow any whip so that no one can vote for their whips after they have voted. Really?

What is the whip system for then? Why do we have whips? Since the beginning of the 4th Republic, elections have always been controlled by whips to ensure that their members vote on a certain line. It happens everywhere in this world. Asking us not to be beaten, we all wondered. The npp did not comply.

The clerk decided that the mood could start back and forth after a while. While the first few npp members were voting, the ndc whip in the person of muntaka attacked an npp member and picked up his ballot from him because he had shown it to someone. A wrestling match ensued and he took away the ballot box himself and the ballot boxes. After a long wait, the mood started again.

This time, the same coin taker took the ballot box and ran away to have someone show their ballot while John Jinapor and Sam George kicked the ballot box. This act happened three times, and leadership once again had to enter a conclave. Upon their return, they asked us not to show our voices anymore. I immediately noticed danger, especially when we noticed many skirmishes during skirmishes where some opposition members would go over to the npp ballot box to vote there etc.

If we look at the slim margin between us, (NPP and NDC), all the ndc had to do was to attract or convince some members of npp and carry the day. Therefore, I indicated to the leadership the dangers in that verdict. After I voted and true to my words, the npp votes counted 136 instead of 138 numbers we had. I would not accept that. The irregularities that accompanied the vote from the beginning were too many, which endangered the mood so much that I wanted to create a situation for a repeat. Just when my colleague from the other side took the ballot box away on three occasions,

I also grabbed a few ballots before it could be counted to force a repeat. It is a very difficult situation to have opposition as a speaker, especially when he is the president in the absence of Nana Addo and his vice-president not to mention how parliament would function by passing on the president’s policies and laws to pave the way for development. My colleagues from the majority side could not help taking advantage of my sacrifices to force a repeat, and we would decide with an opposition speaker.

I must say I am sad and dejected. We have not yet seen the end of this. With this success, they would tell us what they want and what not in parliament because the whip system has been compromised. It’s so sad. I will die for my party every day.

I did this for the grassroots level that relied on us in power to survive, the president who needs a little peace to run the country and the larger NPP party as a whole because we can not always allow that the NDC does not threaten and despise us. However, I apologize to my family and friends from far and wide who may be affected by my actions.

The Npp in me could not be controlled. I apologize, but I tried !!!
