Three children and two adults were found dead in their Ohio home in an alleged suicide.
Their bodies were discovered shortly after 8 a.m. on Wednesday in a house in Elyria by police about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland, WJW reported.
According to WEWS-TV, investigators responded to the house to do a social check and found the bodies of five family members and the family dog.
Neighbor Renetta Hubbard said she heard what sounded like fireworks on Tuesday night near the house.
“Around 5:20 am I heard what sounded like fireworks going off like ‘Pop Pop Pop Pop Pop’,” Hubbard told the news agency.
Hubbard said an employee of the man who owned the house showed up Wednesday to ask if anything had happened in the house. She said no and said the man then called the police.
He said, ‘I see five rounds on the front door. I’m calling the police. ‘And then our neighborhood was full of cops,’ said Hubbard.
Hubbard said she lived in the neighborhood for 28 years and was shocked by what happened.
“As I tell everyone, I’m the nosy neighbor who watches everything, but I didn’t see it. If I had known, I would have called yesterday. “
She said of the father of the family: “Two weeks ago he simply rethought this house, he is always building something.
“He and his friends put the roof on. He’s put up a fence, a swimming pool, an ordinary guy, goes to work, ”said Hubbard.
She said the man lived in the Elyria house for 28 years, first with his father and later with his family, after his father died 15 years ago.
Linda Bristow, another neighbor, told The Courier Daily that she heard gunshots and screams from children. Bristow said she suspected fireworks were going off and children might be swimming in the pool.
“Now I know why you ran around screaming,” she said.
Frank Whitfield, the Mayor of Elyria, said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we share this tragic news.
“It was a challenging year – to say the least. We never thought we’d have to share the news that we’d lost one of Elyria’s families that way.
“Elyria mourns with family and friends who have woken up from such tragic news. My heart is broken for this family, especially the children. “
The mayor continued, “I cannot imagine the pain those around them must feel and we offer our deepest condolences and are here to support them and all of our residents who need our help.”
The names of the deceased have not yet been published.
Local authorities and the Lorain County Coroner Bureau are investigating.
